Every month it comes – your period. As women we follow our monthly cycle. What you feel one day can change to another day. Having your period can be terrible days if you have pain and other problems connected to it. But, there are some things you can do to feel better. And there are also things you´d better avoid. The period is a natural state and should not be the hell that so many women are experiencing.

Slow down
The reason you bleed for some days every month, is to get rid of old endometrium (the lining of the uterus). The endometrium is very important to feed good nutrition to the fertilized egg, so it has a chance growing into a baby. During the monthly cycle, the endometrium is built to become as nutritious as possible. If there is no fertilized egg attached to the endometrium, your body flushes it out (the menstruation), and begin to build up a new nutritious endometrium. In this way you can look at it as a monthly cleansing. When it comes to cleansing it is a time to take it a little bit slow. The energy is needed to cleanse.
This is a time for taking care of you a little bit more than usual. Feel your needs .Maybe do some long deep breathing, listening to music, meditating or having a cozy evening at home. Of course you can be active too, it´s always good to move a bit, but you should not push yourself too hard.

Food
It can be good for your digestive system also taking it easy during the period. Especially if you have problems with adhesions on your intestines, or feel pain eliminating. Try not to eat too heavy food. Soups and tasty smoothies are easy to digest. Nice herbal teas that are relaxing can be nice: chamomilla tea or other relaxing teas.

Ginger, lemon & honey tea can be both relaxing and helpful if you have pain: Slice an inch or two of ginger root and boil it in a quart of water for a few minutes. Add some fresh lemon juice and a tsp of organic honey. This is also a drink that is good if you need some more energy.

Yoga

Things to add in your yoga practice

- There are some nice yoga exercises you can do during the period, if you have pain. You can read about it in this article.
- It´s always good to do some Long Deep Breathings. It calms down your system and is also a good pain relief.
- Meditating is also great to do when you have your period. One simple meditation is to breathe in and out through your left nostril. It has a very calming affect. This is how to do it:

Sit comfortable in easy pose, on a chair or you can also lie down on your back.

Place your right index finger and block the right nostril. Relax your shoulders.

Close your eyes and breathe long and deeply through you left nostril for 5-10 minutes. Keep your focus on the breath all the time.

Things to avoid in your yoga practice

Some exercises can make you bleed heavy all of a sudden:

- Don´t apply Root Locks. (A yogic energy lock)
- Don´t do Breath of Fire. (A rapid, rythmic yogic breathing technique)
- Avoid yoga exercises where you have the pressure on your navel point. It can be crunches, leg lifts, bow pose.

Some yoga poses can make the blood flowing “backwards” and reach your abdominal area and build up new adhesions, when you have endometriosis:

- Avoid yoga exercises where the legs and pelvis is higher than the torso. Like half-wheel pose shoulder stand etc.

Let your period be a time for reflection, rest and taking care of yourself!

Love ♡♡♡

Helen

This article was written by our Project Endo volunteer Yasmin’s partner.

“Hi everyone, I’m Yasmin’s fiance

She asked me to write a little something and I’ve kinda been not doing that so I’m sorry about that now, I am though

We’ve known each other for quite some time and when we were younger we didn’t have a clue about endometriosis, so it was kinda confusing for me sometimes why she’d be really tired alot or suddenly be in pain. I would catch myself thinking ”is she here to see me or to sleep?” or “how can it hurt so bad?”

It’s gotten alot easier with time for me to accept and deal with these things, and of course finding out that it was the endo causing the tiredness and hurt helped alot.

When she gets cramps it pains me that I can’t do anything about itbut comfort her by caressing her lower back and pretty much be silent, as it’s not helpful in any way to ask all sorts of questions.

I cook often if she’s on a bad streak, I used to think it sucked a little sometimes but as time has passed I’ve gotten quite good at cooking so now I don’t really mind it.

The tiredness doesn’t really bother me no more, it did sometimes when we were younger but now that I know that it can’t really be helped and it’s not her fault, I’ve just accepted it.

Plus it gives me a little time to do whatever, which I don’t mind :3

Although she can get a bit bossy and cranky when she’s in pain haha, but I get why so I take it pretty lightly if she snarls at me. Although it’s still not easy to see her in such pain or know that she might faint somewhere, maybe I’m not around at the time maybe she’ll get injured. That and the risk of not being able to have children

are what scare the most I think.

All in all I wouldn’t say that our relationship suffers from the endometriosis it might have a little when we were younger, but I’ve kinda just learned to roll with it.”

The hardest part about Endometriosis is when we have those pain days. You know the ones – the throbbing, the consistent and ever incessant pain that just won’t ease up. It lingers all day and just kinda sits there…. not budging.

I used to reach for the usual Codeine and pain-killers my doctor prescribed, until I worked out that these seemingly harmless “helpers” were contributing to my pain levels. See, for me…. these guys meant more frequent toilet runs to wee and less frequent toilet runs for number two’s! I was usually constipated after taking them and that constipation, made my personal Endometriosis much worse. That bloating and desperate need to “get something out” was often worse than the initial pain I was trying to get over.

So, I decided to explore some natural alternatives, that would perhaps not give me the nasty constipation side-effect.

Here are the 5 Key Step I have used to help me feel better with Endometriosis and that could help you too:

Step 1: Find a herbal pain remedy

This was hard at first. Most of them simply didn’t work. They promised the world but it was all just false marketing! Eventually, I found crampbark and it really did work! I also discovered magnesium tablets and they also eased the muscle tension I was clearly holding in my abdominal area.

Step 2: Get into Castor Oil Packs

I know they are a little bit of a hassle to do and they do require a special pair of “throw away pants” but they are brilliant for pain relief on a more long-term basis. See, Castor Oil Packs work by encouraging lymphatic flow to the area. This means, more blood flowing and circulating and more importantly flushing out of toxins which are sitting in the area.

Castor Oil packs are really inexpensive and are super easy to do. You can watch a free video on how to make your own Castor Oil Pack here.

Step 3: Do some Exercise

Exercise enhances our lymphatic flow and encourages movement throughout the body. Many women with Endometriosis have poor circulation and doing just a little bit of exercise each day, will greatly assist you in feeling better. It doesn’t need to be much…just a 15minute walk each day. My favourite form of exercise is a rebounder! You can jump to music and it works on so many levels. There are many benefits to using a rebounder. You can read more about the benefits of using a rebounder for Endometriosis here.

Step 4: Look at your Stress levels

We are all going through stuff at some point in our lives. We might be looking unhappy in our current job or just feeling overworked or stressed out. These are natural situations and they do occur from time to time. If they have been going on for longer than a few months, it might be a time to reflect and make a change for your health. Jobs are a big chunk of your life and you want to make sure you feel fulfilled and happy with whatever you are doing. It all impacts on your stress levels and ultimately your Endo Pain.

Step 5: Really look at your diet

There are so many fun and fashionable diets out there. I know, I have been a Guinea Pig to many of them! There comes a time when you need to eat foods that fall in line with what your personal body really wants. A point, where you start to listen to your own intuition with food. I know for me, it has taken years to get to a point where I can really listen to my body. Start noticing when you have symptoms or experiences after you eat certain foods. Do you feel bloated, tired or irritable after eating a certain type of food? Do you get an afternoon slump or pain a few hours after eating?

Food really makes a huge difference to our pain levels and contributes dramatically to our healing. Stop listening to what everyone else tells you to eat or some new diet….start listening to what feels right to you. Get educated but also listen to your own bodies needs.

The key element with Endometriosis is not to give up or lose hope. It is easy to do when the pain seems to sometimes strike out of nowhere!

I write a blog, which shares my personal journey with Endometriosis. It has been running since June 2010 and there are over 500 free articles which I share for all the Endo Girls out there. You are not alone and there is heaps of information to help you feel better. You can find my blog at www.endoangel.com.

There is a free private facebook support group for Endo Girls who are keen to use natural methods.

I used to have Stage 4 Endometriosis and now only experience pain for one day a month. I have energy, I have no more pain and I want more women with Endo to feel as good as I do.
